Transitional Year Residency
Foundational clinical training for future specialists
Our program is based at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL, and operates under the umbrella of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. We are fortunate to have an exceptional faculty comprising experts from various departments, including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Combined Med-Peds, and Surgery. Their collective knowledge and expertise greatly contribute to the education of our residents.
The UICOMP program is a one-year clinical base year program designed to precede advanced residencies in fields such as Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, among others.
The primary educational focus of our program is to equip future subspecialists with essential foundational skills in medicine, fostering the development of healthcare professionals who are well-prepared for advanced residency training. Successful applicants can expect a diverse year of training as they prepare to embark on their advanced training programs.

Applying to the Residency Heading link
The UICOMP Transitional Year Residency Program will only accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications will not be accepted through the mail, by e-mail, or by FAX. Please follow the directions provided on the ERAS web site in order to apply. Applications must be received by November 1 and should include:
- A dean’s letter
- Medical school transcripts
- USMLE transcripts
- Letters of reference (LOR) from 3 faculty members
Interviews
Interviews take place between Nov 1st-Jan 15th. Due to COVID-19 and in accordance with AAMC guidelines, we will conduct all interviews and virtual visits online.
International Applicants
U.S. clinical experience does strengthen an application, but it is not required. However all applicants should have recent clinical experience with primary patient responsibility. Observerships alone do not suffice. Your letters of reference do not need to be from an American source.
We require applicants to have graduated medical school within previous 5 years or finished residency training within the last 2 years.
Applicants must be ECFMG certified by June 1.
